What Does It Really Take To Have a Clean Home?
In order to keep your home in tip-top shape without having to clean all the time, there are 3 routines that I would like to share with you, that I do, to keep my home in order.
1| DAILY: resets
In the morning the tasks are to make your bed, tidy up the bathroom after you get ready, clean up the kitchen after breakfast, maybe wipe down the dining table if you need to.
If you are at home most of the day, then a reset after lunch would include cleaning up the kitchen and dishes, the dining table, and quickly picking up a few toys.
In the evening before you go to bed, clean up the kitchen and maybe the dining table, tidy up the living room, and tidy up any toys.
It’s not that much, right?
But guess what this does? In the morning when you wake up, the house is ready and waiting for you because no one has touched it since you went to bed. So you get to wake up to a clean home and not feel stressed first thing in the morning by looking at things that are out of place.
Cleaning up the kitchen after breakfast and clearing the dining table after breakfast. These areas are usually where the most messes are made in the morning because we have to eat, we have to get ready before work and school, so once these areas are cleaned up the house is once again waiting for you. It also leaves it pretty because we’re not taking out toys or not messing up the living room so all those areas are still pristine from the night before.
The reason why we make our beds is to start the day off on the right foot the reason. We tidy up the bathroom so in the evening when we come in there it’s not just like a bomb went off. All of our makeup is put away, all of our hair tools and sprays are put away and we can get ready for bed with less stress.
2| BIWEEKLY: Medium Cleaning
My definition of medium cleaning is that you are actually going room by room and cleaning from top to bottom but you’re not cleaning within things. This is my normal cleaning routine that happens every two weeks.
You can read more about that process in this post because it goes into a lot more detail than I will here, but every room in my house gets cleaned at least once every two weeks. I’ve noticed that two weeks seems to be the best balance between energy used for scrubbing and time it takes to clean. You’re not putting off cleaning for too long so it’s hard to scrub you know stains off and hard water stains and grime but you’re not cleaning too frequently to where you’re just wasting time because you don’t need to be cleaning that often. This process keeps your house well maintained and kept up and you get a rest week if that’s how you want to plan it.
A rest week is a mental and physical lifesaver!
One Sweet Life
WEEKLY: quick cleaning/ touch up cleaning
I wouldn’t really say this needs to be like clockwork the basic premise of this is just anytime you need to quick clean or touch-up it’s usually sometime during the week. You might need to vacuum the floors, or clean off the coffee table, or quick clean the powder room for guests that are coming over. This isn’t a time where you would be spending a lot of time and energy on a task but I did want to list it here because this will come up for you throughout the week.
3| MONTHLY: deep cleaning
Every month you should be picking a space in your home and deep cleaning it. This is along the same lines as spring cleaning, where you clean under the furniture and behind it if you can. You’re opening up drawers and cleaning inside. Taking the books off the shelves, cleaning behind them, and wiping the entire shelf down.
This is also a great time to declutter and purge some items that you no longer use or you no longer want. Even items that you forgot that you even had that you don’t need anymore. We don’t want to be accumulating more without getting rid of stuff that no longer serves us. If you want to see this in more detail, I would love for you to check out my monthly membership She Has MOMentum where we go through a room in our house every month and deep clean it.
Conclusion:
So many steps so much work to keep a clean home but in reality once you start going it’s not that much time and not as much hard work is it may seem. When you have your schedule nailed down, cleaning becomes a habit and you get better at it with time!
