What it looked like before wasn’t bad, there was some organization and sense of order,  but it wasn’t great either. I felt like there was too much to look at. We hardly accessed some of the bins and they were taking up a lot of space. The bins were at eye level when you first opened the door so made it look so busy right from the start.

I knew that I was going to be on a budget tackling this space. I would love to get the Elfa system from the container store and put it in here but at this point it is not in the budget so I have to work with what I got! A great space doesn’t have everything jam packed in it. I am definitely a person that likes to see less visual clutter.

Organizing the Linen Closet

1 | The first thing I did was take everything out. This was so I could go through everything that we had in there. (for such a small space, there was A TON of stuff!)

2| I went through and tossed any expired items. I had a bunch of razors that I took out of their boxes and reconfigured them in the bins. I was able to condense a lot of stuff.

3| After sorting, I wiped down all the shelf liners, vacuumed and mopped the floor so I had a fresh and clean work area.

4| I had some leftover contact paper that I used in the pantry so I put some in the back of the linen closet to spruce it up as well!

OH my gosh, just with the contact paper I was so happy with the change already!!

Putting Stuff Back Into the Linen Closet

After the space was fully prepped and ready to go, I started to put all the items back into the closet.

The theme I was going for the linen closet was definitely spa retreat, a relaxing feel, clean and bright almost. So I knew the first thing when I opened the doors wasn’t going to be looking at a stack of bins. I moved that towards the bottom.

Linen Closet Organization Reveal!

1| The top shelf has our toilet paper and paper towels.

We buy the super bundles from Costco so they need a lot of space. But we can stack them pretty high on the top shelf and they are out of the way up there.

2| The second shelf in the linen closet holds our bath towels.

We have eight towels here. I feel like that’s still a lot of towels for our bathroom, but 4 of them in the bin are really more decor than anything else. 😉 Gotta have the pretty too!! In case we have a lot of guests over, we will be prepared!

3| The third shelf houses our hand towels and washcloths.

We go through the hand towels and washcloths pretty regularly so that is on the most accessible shelf. I have so many of these clear shoe bins that I wanted to re use these first before buying any new bins.

I have 2 to hold our washcloths, one for hand towels, and one for gym type towels. Click here to check out how I fold our towels.

4| On the fourth shelf, there is a big white basket that has all of our swimming and beach towels.

I rolled them up and they all fit perfectly in there. We have so many different colors and patterns that would be so distracting if left out. So I put them all in there as to not take away from the clean look.

Next to the beach towels are our extra sheets. These are for the master bedroom. If you want to know how I folded our sheets, click here to see how I made our sheet bundles.

5| The fifth shelf has our bins.

I only kept 6 bins and only stacked one on top of each other. I didn’t want to have to lift so many bins to get to the bottom ones.

6| On the ground I bought 2 bigger white baskets from Target.

One holds the humidifier that we use for the the girls. The other holds all of the extras and refills. There are q-tips in there, toothpaste, soap, shampoos, cotton balls, femine products, etc. These are things that I don’t need to get to very often.

The beauty of the new design is that first thing that you see isn’t too visually cluttered. It’s towels, sheets, bins. There are clean lines, everything is neatly folded, and no longer packed to the max.

Everytime I open it, I take a deep breath and say “ahhhh”

Linen Closet Organization Tips

Linen Closet Organization Tip 1| Go through your items and get rid of what you are not using and don’t need anymore, anything that’s expired.

This will free up so much space if you haven’t gone through your stash in a while. You’d be surprised how fast things expire!

If you haven’t used an item in the last 6 months, seriously consider donating it. Its been a long time. Make space for the new.

Linen Closet Organization Tip 2| Put some fun decor on the wall to brighten up the space

The linen closet is tucked away in our master bath. Since I wasn’t going to rip up the shelving anytime soon, adding contact paper was the perfect solution! It was easy to stick on the wall and reposition (because, life is definitely not perfect). And if I want to change designs later, that is always an easy and available option!

Linen Closet Organization Tip 3| Don’t overstuff your towels and sheets onto shelves. Give everything enough breathing space.

We get frustrated when we go into a closet for one item but have to completely shove and rearrange things around. Items start falling to the side or worse the floor and it’s just so aggravating. “Why can’t I just come in here and grab one towel and not have to wrestle for it!?”

Create some breathing space for all of your linens and various items not only in the linen closet but everywhere in your house. That way you can reach your hand in there and pull it out without having to worry about knocking something else over.
