Hi guys! I’ve received a lot of questions on how I make yogurt at home.
In this video I show you step by step on how to make your own homemade yogurt!
Hi guys I’m in my kitchen today because I wanted show you how to make homemade yogurt! I got a lot of questions on my post on Instagram on how I did this. It’s so simple, so easy, all you need are a few ingredients. It tastes amazing. If you like the consistency and plain flavor of greek yogurt, then you’re going to like this. It tastes very similar to that.
You can add fruit to it, granola, honey, and definitely make it your own. This is the basic plain flavor homemade yogurt recipe.
Let’s go over the ingredients for this homemade yogurt recipe!
So all you’re going to need for this recipe is 1 liter or 1 quart of whole organic milk
half (½) a cup of instant nonfat dry milk powder
You also need a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
and finally 1 packet or 5 grams of the culture, the yogurt starter. The one that I’m using is the yogourmet right now and it seems to be working pretty well.
Step 1: Heat up the milk
So what you are going to do is add the milk to a pretty good-size pot and also add the dry milk powder. The dry milk powder thickens up the yogurt otherwise it’s a little bit more runny. You can always choose to not add it. I like a thicker consistency in my yogurt. And mix together on low heat.
Heat the milk to 180º F and try not to go higher than that.
Gently stir the mixture around and keeping an eye on the thermometer until it gets to 180º F.
At 180 give this just another quick stir and then we turn off the heat.
Step 2: Allow milk to cool
What we want to do at this point is keep the thermometer in there because we are going to let it cool 108º F. Let is sit and let it cool down.
Step 3: Add culture
Take a ladle full of the milk and pour it into a bowl.
Open the yogurt culture and add in there. Gently dissolve and mix in together.
Once it’s all mixed in, you’re going to pour back into original mixture. Stir together.
Step 4: Strain mixture
What I like to do is take a strainer and pour the mixture back through into extra bowl.
Pour mixture through strainer. I’ve had a couple of milk c
hunks from when the milk was cooking in the pot and it didn’t taste very good. I mean it was still okay. We don’t want that in the yogurt if we can prevent it.
Step 5: Separate yogurt into small jars
I use 6 ounce baby food jars and I can usually fill 6 jars depending on how full I fill the jars.
Take a funnel and it’s about 2 ladle full scoops to fill a jar. Then move on to the next one until all is distributed.
There you go!
Step 6: Put into oven
At this point I put these guys on a cookie sheet and put the caps on all of them.
From here I will put them in the oven on the cookie sheet so it’s easier to transfer them in and out.
You want to put them in there and they are going to stay in the oven with the light on for 12 hours. So, close the door and push the light button so the light stays on. Make sure you don’t turn on your oven.
They are just going to sit and do their thing and firm up.
Step 7: Refrigerate
After 12 hours your yogurt should look and firmed up. You don’t want it to be runny and liquidy, if it is, you kind of have to start the whole process over again.
Throw it in the fridge to cool and it’s ready to eat!
Like I said before I like adding honey to my yogurt, granola, or fruit. Another one of my favorite ways is taking honey, my favorite is the clover honey from Trader Joe’s. I love it because it’s in a bear shape, and add a teaspoon at a time with some almonds right in there to taste.
Quick taste test. Oh my gosh, it’s so good! It’s the best yogurt you’re ever going to have. So, try this recipe let me know how it works for you. If you have any questions let me know. I will see you guys next time.
