We are about to minimalize! We’re starting with cleaning the living room! Are you ready?
I’m loving the concept of reducing all the random things that we have in our home just to have them. I would really like to see us keeping the things we love and the things we use and really getting rid of the rest.
The first room I was able to somewhat accomplish this is in our living room. I am loving this space.
When we first moved into this house we purchased 2 side tables to go on either side of the fireplace (from Ikea). Over time, the one on the right accumulated so much random stuff. I didn’t know how I wanted to decorate it. I didn’t know what I wanted to store in it. So it became more of an eyesore. Like the desk in The Intern… a junk magnet.
I decided to move it to another part of the house, and it functions so well in its other spot. Another bonus is that I didn’t need to buy an extra piece of furniture. I just repurposed it!
The way I used to furnish a room, was to see how much I could cram in there. Now it feels so much better to see what we can remove. How much openness and “airiness” we can get in a space.
DECLUTTERING
- entertainment
- electronics
- books/magazines
- furniture
- kids toys
- pet toys
First things first is to purge! This is the hardest part. Making the decision of what to keep and what to toss. Go through all your things and keep what you love, keep what is useful to you, toss your things that are weighing you down.
CLEANING THE LIVING ROOM
- dust furniture / wet wiped
- clean windows / blinds
- clean baseboards
- vacuum / wash curtains
- wash pillow covers
- vacuum behind/under/top of the sofa
- dust ceiling fan
- clean doors
- sanitize light switches & remote control
- vacuum / mop floors
- shampoo carpet & sofas
This type of cleaning list is a deeper clean than a normal bi-weekly clean. You are getting behind and under furniture. Also shampooing carpets and furniture if you are able to. You can also think of this as a spring clean. Instead of doing all the cleaning once a year, we’re breaking it up into months. Focusing on one room per month.
MAINTAINING THE LIVING ROOM
1. put dishes in the kitchen
2. fix throw pillows
3. put blankets away
4. have the kiddos help put their toys away
5. put pets toys away
Doing these little tasks every day will help keep your room looking beautiful! These tasks shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to put everything away before you go to bed!
