Here are some of my best sugar cookie tips!

1| If you are actually looking for cookie cutters, Michaels has super cute cookie cutters for $1!

I was able to pick up the last “3”! Phew! And I also found a mason jar that I thought I could double for a “hunny” pot. I also saw a variety of cookie cutters at Jo-Ann’s for 99 cents. So there are a lot of options there. You can also grab entire cookie cutter sets at Michaels too. I also ordered a Winnie the Pooh head shaped cookie cutter from Ebay for the actual Winnie the Pooh face.

My plan was to make one batch of cookies, the recipe said it would be around 18 to 24 cookies Thursday evening. Plus I ordered the Pooh cookie cutter a little late and they weren’t going to arrive until Thursday! Then I figured I could frost them Friday morning and they would be dry and ready to go by Saturday Afternoon. Since they need about 24 hours to completely dry.

I got the recipe for the sugar cookies and the royal icing from Flour Box Bakery’s youtube channel.

I didn’t know how much icing I would need for the cookies, but only one batch of icing was needed for one batch of sugar cookies! Luckily..;)

I needed 4 different colors of icing: white, black, yellow, and red. The idea was to re-use what I needed to for the 3 different shapes of cookies. You have to use a thicker version of the icing first to outline the perimeter of the cookies. So I needed a thick and a thinner version of white, yellow, and red.

This whole time I’m praying that I’m not messing up!

Also, if you need white, you don’t need to buy any white food coloring. With this royal icing recipe, the base white color is pretty crisp and clean. This saves you a little bit of money!

2| Use black edible marker for black icing

I needed black icing for Winnie the Pooh’s face and the only color I could get with the food coloring I had was a medium gray color. I decided to pick up a black edible marker on a hunch and it was amazing! It made my life so much easier!

3| To get even baking of the cookies, you want to line the cookie sheet with parchment paper.

I actually found pre-cut parchment paper from the Kroger brand. This made it so much easier to lay on the cookie sheets! I didn’t have to measure and and cut my fingers on the jaggedy edge.

4| Piping Bag Couplers are a must.

I only had one piping tip of each size that I needed. To make transferring the tips easier and way less frustrating, think about investing in piping bag couplers. These are inserted into the bag and allows you to easily change the piping tips. These aren’t very expensive but definitely make a difference!

5| Squeeze bottles make flooding way easier.

I found a Wilton squeeze bottle for candy making at Party City on clearance for $1! This made squeezing the flooding icing (the thinner version) around the cookie so smooth and so easy!

Bonus cookie tip: Make sure your royal icing consistency is exactly where it needs to be before you start piping.

I’m serious! The yellow icing was the first one I started working on. This took me the longest amount of time because it was a little too thick. That made it hard to shape around the cookie and kept chipping off. You can see that I made a lot of mistakes this first round!
